Monetizing your WordPress mobile search

I seriously love blogging because I’m being paid for doing what I love doing best. I also do love blogging because i have the option(s) to monetize every part of my blog. How do I mean? You can monetize your images, spaces, videos, blog post and even your search bar. Aint that awesome?

search-box

On one of my recent post, I did discuss how to monetize our blog search bar using Google Custom Search Bar. In case you missed the post, you can still click the link to learn more about monetizing your blog search bar.

Monetizing your WordPress mobile search

If you are on mobile right now, it will be nice to scroll to the bottom of my mobile theme and see the search box there. The search box is a customized one from Google, cool right? Who’d you like to know how I did mine so you can do yours as well? If your answer is yes, then follow the little instruction below…

Note: This is a remake of an old post I did when mobilepress theme was still in version 2.x. Now mobilepress have upgraded their theme and some little changes. So this post should help you solve that issue 🙂

First of all before you can carry out this operation i am about to show you, you must first read How To Create And Setup A Google Custom Search For Your Blog.

Have you done that? Now the tutorial will be simpler so follow below.

– Open your notepad or if you have dreamweaver or any code edtor, open it because we are about to make us a search box.

– Simply copy the search box you created earlier and paste it in the notepad or dreamweaver. In case you don’t know how the search box code looks like, here it below.
<center><form action="http://onenaijablog.com/seachmenow" id="cse-search-box">

<div>

<input type="hidden" name="cx" value="partner-pub-YOUR-ID-HERE" />

<input type="hidden" name="cof" value="FORID:10" />

<input type="hidden" name="ie" value="UTF-8" />

<input type="text" name="q" size="28" />

<input type="submit" name="sa" value="Search" />

</div>

</form>

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.google.com/jsapi"></script>

<script type="text/javascript">google.load("elements", "1", {packages: "transliteration"});</script>

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.google.com/cse/t13n?form=cse-search-box&t13n_langs=en"></script>

&nbsp;

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.google.com/coop/cse/brand?form=cse-search-box&amp;lang=en"></script></center>
You can copy the above code and change the YOUR-ID-HERE to your pub id.

Have you copied the code? If yes, save it as searchbox.php

Now upload the “searchbox.php to your directory by going to your C-panel >>> Click Legacy File Manager and upload the “searchbox.php” where your WordPress is being installed.

Have you done that? Now let’s start the implementation of the search box to our mobilepress theme. Are you ready?

Hope you are still in your c-panel? Without the quotes, simply click “WP-Content” >>> Plugins >>> Mobilepress >>> Themes >>> defaults

Are you there now? Now click footer.php to either download or use the default c-panel code editor.

If your code editor is opened, search for this tag <?php get_search_form(); ?>

Must Read: Your Website Is Liable To Get Hacked Because…

Note: The tag is usually seen at the first line of the footer code. So it shouldn’t be a problem seeing it right?

Have you seen it? Now replace the code with the below one

<center><?php include(‘searchbox.php’); ?></center>

Now click the save button and you are done. The process was simple right? Now go and search your mobile view now and see how accurate your searches will be 🙂

Note: Please always backup your blog when messing around with your codes…

  1. Hi Babanature,

    Oh yes…I remember the Google Search Box post, and that was the time I had set up my Google Search box too, though I haven’t made anything much from that. Nevertheless, it does help me when I have to search something on my blog or otherwise too.

    Yes, with mobile being the second most device that posts are read on, it makes sense to monetize your WordPress, though I would have to be very careful and follow the ways you suggested. Thus, bookmarking them for doing over the weekend, in peace-time.

    Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

    Regarding this article, I’m not so keen to cse but I’m sure many wants to know how to do it.

    Buddy when you started this article on 2nd paragraph “On one of my resent post..” Correct word is “recent” with this context. Do not get upset, I too make mistakes all the time, the important thing is to have learn from mistakes. See you next time buddy. Kind regards from I. C. Daniel

  3. Not many blogs and websites utilize that. Though the main downsite is that with this method, most likely website/blog will have high exit traffic. I personally prefer to keep visitor on my website as longer as possible.

    1. Hello Banev,
      I do love the custom search because of its accuracy.
      It is easy to remove the ad while using the custom search so you won’t loose the traffic.
      Thanks for the comment and do have a good week ahead…

  4. I have read several articles that teach readers on how to monetize. But to be straight forward, it is difficult, I think you need someone to sit beside you and teach you the steps how.

    Let’s face it, newbies in WordPress or not, still have the difficulty in monetizing their WordPress mobile search.

    Anyway, nice share. Even though I am a bit negative, still I appreciate your steps by step guide. Indeed, simple.

  7. Hi Babanature,

    Great technical but easy to follow post! I haven’t used google search on my wordpress blog though, but your post make me interested to try. Thanks for this awesome explanation my friend

  8. Babanature,

    I’m not using Google Search (…yet), but I’m blown-away that you’d be able to monazite it. (Very cool!)

    After I comment I’m going to check out your site. It looks like you’ve got some awesome stuff. Thanks!

    Cheers!

    Robb

    1. Hello Robb,
      Yeah, indeed Google custom search can be monetize and it is much effective when you compare it to other Google adsense method.

      Indeed, i am sure that you’re going to find some other post interesting as well.
      Thanks for stopping by and dropping your comment. Do have a lovely week ahead…

  9. Well it’s really informative post, using of mobile search on our wordpress blog will surely get some great clicks. I’ve been using a mobile search on my tech blog and I’m quite happy with it’s performance.

    Cheers

  10. Hey Babanature,

    I also remember that post you did about the Google Search Box and my response was I don’t want anymore Google stuff on my blog if I can help it. Now I know that the search is for things related to our blogs but I don’t like the ads that are at the top either.

    I know my blog is readable on mobile devices and I’m sure it could be better and as you said you definitely want to make it more user friendly. I’ll have to give this more thought. I know more and more people with each new day are using their mobile devices to access our blogs but since I’m not one of them I guess it’s not as evident to me. I do need to get with the program though so thanks for this update.

    Have a great week.

    ~Adrienne

  11. I guess new visitors are not interested to use google search box only if they wanted to search for a specific post. I’ve been using it on my blogs and I think it will also bring some hits.

    Thanks for update.
