5 Things You Do That Makes You Look Like An Amateur Blogger

God!!! Making our blog look as perfect as possible is what all bloggers are doing everyday behind the blog post scene, do you know that? And to speak the truth, blogging is so darn technical, hard but fun, believe it or not.

amateur-blogger

A true blogger always work and work to make sure his/ her site is well presented and looks responsive in the eyes of the readers. Getting the perfect hosting company to host your blog, searching and finding the right theme, infusing that perfect logo, adding the best plugin and codes to make your blog just the way it is. Making your blog simple is good, doing things other bloggers are not doing is even more awesome but making other bloggers see you as a beginner is not cool bro 🙂

Throughout my blogging years, I have visited a lot of blogs, (static html) websites and forums that are just so unimaginable 😀 . You might not know, but doing some little mistakes can cause harm to your blog then good. Even if you don’t agree with me, the fact is still the fact.

5 Things You Do That Makes You Look Like An Amateur Blogger

I know that we are humans and making mistakes is in our nature but there are some mistakes we just don’t make, don’t you think? below are some little mistakes you do that makes you look like an amateur…

Showing your alexa rank:

When I joined the blogging world new, I was told that before any investors will do business with your blog you must have a good alexa rank. Aside all that, your alexa rank shows how demanding (popular) your blog is. Tell me, if your alexa is 3 million why bother pasting a banner on your blog showing people that your site is 3million? Seriously, if I visit your site and see your alexa rank badge on your sidebar telling me you are 3million in the world, I’ll just read your post (because it’s lovely) and never make a comment to show my appreciation because your site is just so poor. Well many might be against my theory but dropping your blog link with low ranking websites/ blogs affect your SEO, take it or leave it.

Solution:

Seriously, I want to comment on your blog and I know many people want to do too, but try to remove that alexa sticker and wait for the right time to put it, if you want to put an alexa sticker (banner) on your blog, try adding the “ review my blog” banner instead to help boost your alexa rank.

Unstable blog:

I have visited your blog for like 5 consecutive times and each time I visit, your server is always down. Even when your blog server is back on, you still have a slow blog or a blog that does not load properly. Gosh! I hate visiting blogs like that, don’t you? If your blog is running slow and your server always has downtime, I’ll take you as an amateur and probably never visit your site again.

Your silly excuse for always having downtime might be; I don’t have money for a better host. Your blog is your business center so stop playing with it.

I mean every blog you know do have a downtime problem sometimes but not frequent or always like the one you are having.

Solution:

I know nothing in this world is perfect but there are some things you just don’t do and call it a mistake, right? My brother my sister, it is time to ditch that hosting provider and move on to a better one. Stop looking at your blog like its nothing and start treating your blog like it’s something.

If you always have a slow blog try to fix it and if you can’t fix it, ask a friend to or hire a profession to get the job done before you’ll lose even more of your visitors.

Don’t play with code:

I’ll say that this one is common amongst bloggers who are none-techie. They want to explore their database, they want to work with their theme files, they just want to be technical and don’t care to know how to.

I have been to so many blog that has some big issues with their coding(s), especially those ones using Google adsense on their blog. Some bloggers do complain that they have been ban by the adsense team, but do you know why you got ban? The simple reason is, you did not implement your script properly.  There are just a lot to talk about my friend.

Do not play with something you can’t control because they might cause you even more harm than you think.

Solution:

If you don’t know how to play with codes, find someone to guide you through. So they can be there to help when problem arise. And if you don’t see anybody that can put you through, hire a professional to do it for you. Don’t keep unnecessary side widget that may look unprofessional.

Language:

amateur

Where I’m from (Nigeria), we have so many tribes and languages that most uneducated people don’t know how to write or speak English (properly). Yes! That’s true…

Seriously, I did not grow up speaking English but I did grow up writing it 🙂 . My point is, even if English is not my native language, I still try to write the way you will understand me even if my English is not 100% perfect.

If you can’t write proper English, then don’t create an English blog. Why? Because you will only show the world that you’re an amateur. Your visitors will leave your blog without ever reading it and that’s a pure fact.

Solution:

Even if you don’t know how to speak proper English, go and learn how to write and make proper sentence. Or better still, write your blog in your own language and focus it to your people (country), doing this, you will achieve what any blogger would achieve.

Conclusion:

We are all learners and we are still striving to know more. Your limit ends when you stop dreaming so make goal achievable by doing above your limit. Make mistake but don’t make those silly ones 😀

  1. Hey bro,
In these points, you don’t only look amateurish! You also look stupid 😉
I don’t know why many newbie bloggers don’t get the alexa point. Why the rush to tell the world your blog is #3m?

I like the fact that you raise the issue and propose a solution. That makes the post different from what we commonly read.

    Good read this morning!

  2. So, it is all about Alexa rank)) That is important, but actually even being an amature i don’t see the point in showing the Rank.. it is my personal stuff why would someone wanted to see it too?

    1. Hello Martin,
Most amateurs just feels like showing anything and don’t care to know if the things can hurt them. All the same bro, thanks for stopping by and have your self a fabulous weekend.

  3. Hi Babanature,

Ah…I loved the image right on top – so apt for this post 🙂

And of course this post even had solutions to all the problems that makes it easier for those who might be making these amateurish mistakes to take note and get better.

I agree with you about the Alexa rank widget, and I had added mine sometime back but then removed it as I feel it’s kind of blowing your own horn. Those who are keen on the rank etc. would have many ways of checking it, so why add a widget for that. Similarly, I find people asking or literally messaging their friends and followers to leave reviews on Alexa, but is that being true to yourself? I would rather have no review than gather many this ways because I need to answer to my conscious before anything. However, having a widget with a review my blog is acceptable.

Ah…playing with codes – another thing I’m really scared of and you know who I have to help me with at my end 🙂 Similarly, having a proper stable blog, is essential or else you lose your readers, and writing in English as you mentioned are very important for any blogger, if you have an english one.

Thanks for sharing these things we need to avoid, along with their solutions. Have a nice day ahead 🙂

  4. Hey Babanature,

Some of us have to learn the hard way. I know I did LOL, but in the end it all worked out. This is a great post for newbie bloggers. A lot of us what I call make “common sense errors” believe it’s ok to keeping making them. I know that we must fail to succeed because without failure we don’t learn and grow. But some of us fail completely making the same mistakes. This post right here is a good wake up call for not only beginners but for those of us that’s been blogging for a while. Thanks for the sharing!

    1. Hello Sherman,
I couldn’t agree with you more. we all have failed at some point or another and will continue to fail as long as we are on this earth but the ability to learn from our mistake is what makes us unique and excel even further. thanks for your valuable comment and do have a good weekend…

  5. Hi Babanature,

Lovely post! It captivated me till the end.

All your points are spot on. You nailed it. I agree with you on all of them but the one about language stuck out for me. I am also from a middle eastern origin and English is not my native language but I do care to deliver the message in an understandable manner. I visited several blogs where I had difficulty understanding the English there and unfortunately I just had to leave.

Another mistake I found in 2 or 3 blogs I visited. I craft the comment according to the subject of the post and when I submit it, it is gone. It’s really a waste of time to the readers after they read the post and comment, it’s all gone with the wind.

Thanks Babanature for sharing these mistakes with all us and the solutions to solve them. Great post indeed.

    Be Blessed,

    Neamat

    1. Hello Neamat,
I hate it when i visited a blog and doesn’t understand a thing of what the blogger is saying. at times i’d wonder if its English he’s writing or some other language 🙂 Seriously, if you can’t deliver an understandable English ten switch to tribal blog, right? Thanks for your valuable comment my friend and do have yourself a great weekend 🙂

  6. Hey Babanature,

I had to chuckle because you’re so right. Blogging isn’t just about writing posts, there is so much more to it then that. We’re given so much different information about what’s the right thing to do that it’s overwhelming.

I can’t really fault a lot of the newbies though. They probably learned from all the wrong people too. But you’re right, some of these mistakes are just you advertising that you don’t have a clue what you’re doing. That might be the case but you can at least come across as a little more “put together” ya know.

I was speaking with a guy just today and when he heard my story of how clueless I was he was very surprised. We both had run into people who claimed they were teaching us the right things when we later learning how stupid we both felt.

I do hope though that they’ll do more research about the hosting service before jumping in because I have a friend right now who is going through pure hell because he blog was hacked and her hosting service is arguing with her that she wasn’t. She went the inexpensive route and she’s paying the price.

Great post and great share. Hope you enjoy your weekend.

    ~Adrienne

    1. Hello Adrienne,
I visited a blog some weeks back and i saw the blog alexa ranking banner at the sidebar of the blog. I was kind enough to ask the owner of the blog why did he put such banner on his blog showing his bad ranking, and he said that he was instructed to do so by a “problogger”. As you have said, most of this new bloggers are being mislead and it is our duty to put them right on track, right? Thanks for your valuable comment my friend. do have yourself a valuable weekend 🙂

  7. Great post Baba,
These are really true for newbie bloggers, I think one of the reasons why most newbie bloggers add the Alexa badge is because of the myth that adding it may help to reduce their alexa rank rapidly not knowing that it does not work like that.
I did not verify my blog, BTT on Alexa and our Alexa rank is now below 100K, there is nothing like publishing quality content and marketing your blog effectively.
    Awesome post Bro.

    1. Ahhh… Thanks you Joseph,
You are right, you do not need to claim your blog before you’ll get good alexa rank. i did not claim my blog but it is below 50k. Working smart and putting a little hard, can get you there. Thanks for stopping by

  8. Hi Babanature,
This is just an awesome article. I love the way you gave the problems and solutions. Anyway, one other thing that makes you look like an amature is when you do not create unique content, it really sucks finding an article i’ve read somewhere else on another blog. Anyway, nice job bro.

  9. Thanks for sharing these incredible tips, though am learning HTML and CSS coding and i really enjoy playing with them. Thanks for posting bro.

  10. Hi Babanature,
You’ve got me in “the language”,

As you may know I provide dual language in a single blog (my native Indonesian and English). It’s kind a risky though, but I can’t help myself to blog about what I like.

I have to admit I often made grammar error but I just can’t stop blogging, I like it.

That’s why I skip the language problem and keep writing with passion. I believe within time all the hard work will pay off.

    Great post my friend

    1. Hello Okto,
Like my pops would always say; learning from your mistake is what makes you a man. Before i publish a post i read it like 4 times to know if my eyes can catch any mistakes, i’ll get out from the pc and come back after like an hour to read it again. if i am then satisfy with my work, i’ll schedule it and hope my mistake is not that much when others read it. English is also not my rightful language but its the general language of the world 🙂

I also learn one thing in my blogging years, that as long as people keep visiting and leaving valuable comment on your blog, then you’re doing it right. Thanks for your comment buddy. have yourself a blissful weekend 🙂

  11. Nice post buddy you shared with fatal mistakes that actually make you a foolish and stupid blogger like Enstine said 😉
I think bloggers should prevent this deadly mistakes 😀
OMG! playing with the code is the worse mistake when I was a newbie in blogger I was playing with the HTML code without backing up the template what a fatal mistake man !
thanks for sharing this deep insight man 😀

    1. Hey Anis,
Playing with code when you don’t know how to use it is a great risk, except being guided by a pro. Thanks for the comment and do have a good weekend

  12. I wonder how many bloggers will be reading this post with guilt all over their faces, lolz. I can tolerate the other points you mentioned in this article but one stands tall and very annoying, and that’s writing in bad English.

There is this popular blog i have to write comments on because i have to, every time i try to read it, the way it is badly written will always steal the message of the post because i won’t understand a thing and i feel bad.

I just hope the blogger can read this post and do something about it because it isn’t pleasant at all. Thanks for sharing such a useful advice as post.

    1. AHAHAH… I understand you perfectly Nwosu,
I have visited a blog that makes me go 100% annoyed. I went there, drop a comment and said to my self that i will never visit that blog again. That is not a cruel thing because if i decide to always visit the blog, i wouldn’t understand what he’s saying and my comment will not go with his post which will look bad. the best thing these bloggers should do, is change to their language or better still, go learn some English 🙂

  13. Practicing writing Babanature can help you build a professional blog.

Write daily. Write a ton, posting 1, 2 or 3 times.

Post helpful comments on other blogs.

With practice you can be a pro in no time.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Ryan

  14. really this post will be helpful for new bloggers like me. Coding,,Alexa rank,,And English vocabulary this are problem which are faced by every Blogger in the beginning of his blogging journey 🙂 Thanks

  15. Hey Babanature,
some of the point just feels like u’re directing the post at me.

As soon as my blog got alexa rank, infuse the banner. because i was told that when you put the banner on your blog, your rank would increased. i’m going to remove it and do what you suggested. thanks 🙂

  16. It’s not just Alexa badge, but sometimes I saw some bloggers put dozen of badges on their sidebar as well 🙂

I don’t mind reading article from people where English is not their first language, as well it’s must readable. Some grammatical error is fine, everyone’s learning.

    1. Hey Rudd,
You’re right, showing unnecessary ads on widgets is also bad and look irritating 😀
I also do read blogs that their English is not solid but the thing is, if i can’t read it, i won’t waist my time there. that’s it. Thanks for stopping by and dropping your valuable comments, do have a great weekend ahead. 🙂

  17. Hi Baba! Another great post – true to the heart!

Having strong hold on language can be the added benefit but I agree with you that it should not stop you blogging. We can learn to create proper sentences and make ourselves comprehensible. I’m from Nepal and English is not my first language. However, reading a lot and learning to write will improve it to the acceptable range quick.

Another interesting point you raised is the batches and counts. I also believe it is better to display the numbers only when they are worthy enough to show.

  18. Wonderful write up. You really nailed it at some crappy bloggers who just keep adding and over tweaking their blogs only to annoy visitors. All points were clearly stated with wonderful solutions. I think the language aspect is the most important to consider as that’s the major aspect to the blog. People visit to read before considering anything else so a good command of a specific language counts.

    1. Hello Ivan and welcome to my blog 🙂
You know, your language and the way you put your grammar is the only thing that will make you unique. nobody wants to read a blog that they will not gain or understand from. This is one factor that needs enlightenment. Thanks for stopping by and dropping thought, do have a joyous Sunday 🙂

  19. I have another point to add:

Invest in a good Designer to make you a catchy Logotype and a beautiful Blog Design. 😉

I don’t exactly agree with the point that you shouldn’t blog in English if your language skills are not perfect. Actually some little mistakes can make a non native speaker even more charming or entertaining. I’m just a blogger, not a reporter for a news channel. English is not my mothers tongue and surely I do a lot of mistakes and typos. Do my readers actually care about? Not really. Nobody has ever send me a list with my typos (and I know I do a lot).

    1. Hello Sab,
English is not also my mother tongue but even if i make some silly mistakes and typos, people still do understand me and my writing very well. Even if you make some typos and mistakes, at-least the post is still understandable and readable, right? But there are some blogs that are written in English that is impossible to understand what the writing is explaining. i would have mention blogs but that’s just not my style 🙂 .

Instead writing English that none would understand, it is best to write in your language millions would understand. that is just what i am saying. Thanks for stopping by Sab and do have a lovely week start 🙂

  20. Wonderful post Baba!

People are showing their alexa widget even if they have poor rankings because ,they have read somewhere that placing alexa widget will improve their rankings.
And one can improve their language by reading and hearing more in English.

    Worth Sharing this post 😀

  21. I would like to the points that are mentioned by you is the must for any amateur blogger like “unstable blog” and “donot play with the code”.
This post would definetly help any new upcoming blogger.

  22. Even though I am a new blogger, I try to follow the things so that others don’t push me aside just because I am a newbie.
I used to have the Alexa widget on my blog, but I removed it some days ago, just to remove some unnecessary clutter from my sidebar.

About the “playing with codes” part, I would say I love playing with codes. Being a student of computer science, I don’t face any problem with that.

  23. I truly agree with your points. Sometimes even if you are already an experienced blogger, if you cannot express yourselves in the context of language then you will look like amateur. You must learn how to brainstorm and research your content properly.

  24. About Alexa Rank,I agree. The blogger should only display their Alexa Rank if their blog is ranked at least 100, 000 in the world. But that is according to my view.

  25. Hey Babanature,

You have nailed it yet again… And what I liked about this post that it not only pointed out our mistakes, I mean to say those of us that find ourselves in the newbie zone, But also proffered meaningful and helpful solutions to it.

Thanks for sharing this bro.. Glad I found this just that it was kinda late. Na You OOO

    Sam

    1. Hello Sam,
Thanks for saying that. you know, as a newbie blogger, it is good to know these things so you won’t endup in a category that is not good for you.
Glad you find the post and did follow it up. do have your self a nice week 🙂

    1. Hello Sameer,
Yes, we are all amateur bloggers from the beginning. Leaning from your mistakes is what differentiate you from the rest.
Thanks for your comment and do have a nice week ahead…
