Google Suddenly Stop Sending Visitors To Your Blog? Try This Steps

Some days back – I was doing my normal blog promotion routine, I saw a question over at yahoo answer that spark my interest and the question goes like – “Why Google has suddenly stopped sending visitors to my blog”. This is one hot question that deserves a post, don’t you think? And because I know that many others out there are looking for an answer to this same question, so I’ll just drop my part here :).

If one day you stop getting traffic from Google or the latest update hit your blog, then you might fix the problem by following the below steps. But if your blog or its post is not showing on Google or other search engines, then your blog might have been blacklisted due to illegal activity(s) from your end :).

Must Read: Strategy To Rank Your Articles In Search Engine To Get Free Targeted Traffic

You can fix a blacklisted blog but that is not our topic for today, right? our topic is how to bring your lost blog back to all search engines radar. So let’s start the show with my fresh lists :). And the number one on my list is;

Re-submit your blog sitemap to your webmaster:

Do you know that it is advisable to submit your sitemap to Google and bing webmaster once a week or so? But have you done that lately? I guess not :(. I do know that search engine crawlers and bot do come to our site but at the same time, it is good to show them that we are well structured and also let them know that we are consistent.

Now to my advice – if you are using wordpress as your blogging platform, I will advise you to get a plugin called “Google xml sitemap”. It automatically creates a sitemap for your blog anytime you make a new post or changes… just take your sitemap url and submit it to Google and bing webmaster. Within 24hours, Google bot will be all over your blog :).

This method helps your organic traffic grow and if you’ve been hit, this might put you back up :).

Check and clean your blog for broken links:

Believe it or not – broken links and error redirecting pages can land your blog in trouble. If your blog has error pages, with time it will make your blog automatically lose its rank in searches. And we all know that broken link is a disease and we also know what will happen if we have so many broken links in our blog.

Must Read: Top 5 Related Post Plugins That Will Surely Reduce Your Blog Bounce Rate

My simple advice – first search for the broken links in your blog and take your time to delete the broken links. There are some few plug-ins that can search for broken links for you, but if you’re that type that don’t want to add anymore plug-in to your arsenal, you can use an online broken link checker. I use “Broken link checker” to check for broken links.

To correct your error pages or post, go to Google webmaster >>> in the “Crawl Errors” section, you will see what page(s) is giving error when Google crawler or bot visits you. Try to correct the pages or post and after correcting it, go back to your webmaster and click “Mark as fixed”.

Speed Up your blog web and mobile view:

I hate slow site, you hate slow site, Google hate slow site, all search crawlers and bots hate slow site. Tell me, who would want to spend his/her precious bandwidth to a slow site that might take forever to open?

Must Read: I quit: The One Reason Why Bloggers Quit Blogging

If a search crawler comes to your slow blog and it takes too long to index your site, it will leave without saying goodbye :). So it is good to speed up your blog. While you’re at it, here are some best ways to speed up your blog

Also it is good to optimize your site for your mobile users. I did here (forgot where i read it) that Google will be removing sites that are not mobile friendly from mobile search results.

So my advice is to get a mobile theme to make your site faster on mobile platforms or use a responsive theme. And please do note that all search engines have a mobile crawler so doing that is an added advantage.

Join the social network power house:

Sometime, it might be that Google crawlers are finding it hard to crawl your blog. We all know that popular sites get faster indexing than average sites, that’s why we want popular sites to link back to us.

But the thing is – you can also make your blog get faster indexing as well. Did you ask how? You can simply get faster indexing by religiously posting your contents on your Facebook timeline, tweet and Google+.  And also encourage your blog readers to share your content on the mentioned social networks as well.

Doing this your blog will be indexed within 24 hours. But it will take a while to index the whole of your blog posts except your blog is new and has just 20 posts :).

Don’t engage in illegal blog activities.

Most new bloggers don’t know the do and don’t in traffic generation. They believe every traffic source is valid so they close their ears so they won’t listen or hear what you’re saying. After some time, they’re site gets swipe out of all search engines and before you know it, they’ll come back to you seeking advice.

Now here is the thing;

→ Spamming is dangerous for your blog

→ Building backlinks from spam sites is bad for your blogs health

→ Accepting spam comments and trackbacks is bad for your site health

→ Getting automated clicks is bad for your site health

→ What else should I add?

The thing is when blogging, do it with clean mind, do it because you love it and do it because of your goal. You indulge in bad activities, your site is going down…

My advice – Don’t do evil, try to work hard and smart to get real time web traffic. Because real traffic stays for a longer period of time but automated traffic stays for just a minute or seconds.

If you don’t know it, don’t do it:

I see many bloggers trying out things they don’t know and at the end, it back fires at them. The thing is – many new bloggers hears that seo can boost ones traffic, so without proper knowledge, understanding or tutorial, they practice seo on their blog. After a while, they stop receiving organic traffic.

  1. Hi Babanature,

You are SO right because this is exactly what all we need to take care of if we want our posts to rank again, in-case it’s not getting the required traffic.

One question about Sitemap though, if I am using Yoast Sitemap, is that good enough too because I then don’t have to go in for an additional plugin, or is the Google Sitemap plugin you mentioned better as compared?

Broken link checker is wonderful and I do keep cleaning my blog often with it. Similarly, I think our readers are generous, at least some of them, to share our posts on the social media, so that takes care of things 🙂

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

BTW – Some probs with the CommentLuv link 🙂

    1. Hello Harleena,

I have never used Yoest sitemap before but i am sure that it is working perfectly well on your blog. As long as your sitemap has all the basic functions, then it is good to go.
I am using Google xml sitemap because it’s what i’ve been using from start and it is what many bloggers i know use :).

Most times, i make sure i spend some few hours trying to remove broken links and as well as error pages and i am glad you’re also doing it. This shows that your blog is as healthy :).

Thanks for stopping by and dropping your wonderful comment as always dear friend, Do have a lovely week end…

    2. Harleena,

Though Babanature has answered you, I wish to chip in a comment: nothing beats the Google XML Sitemap. It’s specifically made to be compliant with the world’s largest search engine. If you’re thinking traffic therefore, you should think Google!

      Have a nice weekend, Harleena!

      – Terungwa

  2. Hello Baba,

You said it all. In the last few days, I have read or heard altogether complaint’s of de-indexing and drop in traffic from a considerate number of bloggers. Penguin 2.1 was released in Oct 4th and that could have been a major cause.

That said, illegal backlinking is evil, it guarantees only short term success and once caught, it becomes a misery. Broken links checker is very important, I was shocked after seeing my 1st site audit I performed recently. Most times, we are too fast and we forget to confirm the links.. Some links could have been removed altogether by their authors.. So the link checker is a very important routine.

Thanks Babanature and do have a nice day 🙂

    1. Hello Nosa,
As you, many bloggers have approached me about de-indexing. And what i”ll tell them is simple; go and re-submit your Sitemap for re-indexing :).
Indulging on unnatural linking is bad and doing so can flag your blog and when your blog get flagged, you will then be talking of new strategies to bring your blog back to life. The best way to treat your blog, is by doing it with care because our blog is our business 🙂

Thanks for stopping by and dropping your comment, do have a wonderful week and a lovely weekend start…

  3. that was really a good write up. I have many broken links after migration. So as your suggestion fixing all error making site to load faster. I have been joining all social media services to increase my traffic and also I considered the above mentioned tips to improve my traffic. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Hi Babanature,

Thanks to Nosa for tagging me to this post on Facebook, I have been complaining about this a while that my blog suffer Google latest update but I don’t believe my blog was hits by Google yet but my blog organic traffic dropped drastically to the extent that it baffles me and am still battling with it but with this I’ll put things back to normal by re-submitting my blog sitemap to search engine. Thanks for sharing!

    1. It is not only penalty that affects your organic traffic, have you ever heard of blog high bounce rate and it’s possible effect?

Your title has to completely rhyme with your post body or at least %86 ratio.

The last time I was opportune to work on your blog I realized that your post on “is google pagerank update gone” garnered a lot of organic traffic but wasn’t of any use to the researchers ‘cos the bounce rate was so high.

So when you have more than two post with such high bounce rate, google will move it to the second or 3rd page, and that is not necessarily a ban or penalty.

    2. Hello Adessanmi,
Because you’re loosing organic traffic doesn’t mean you’ve been penalize. If you’ve been penalize by Google, they will send you a message in your webmaster.
As Obasi stated, if your bounce rate is above 70% – going to 100% you will likely lose a great deal of organic traffic. Aside that, you might be performing your SEO wrongly (if your doing seo).
I will be dropping a new post on how you can fight bounce rate effectively on my next two or three blog post… But for now, do use this tips, i am sure they will work.

Thanks for stopping by and dropping your comment, do have a wonderful week ahead…

  5. Hi Baba,

I don’t prefer using plugins on WordPress, is there an alternative to the site map plugin that crosses the 500 web page threshold?

      1. Hi baba,

I do have a WordPress blog but i have to start all over again. This is the reason i am studying WordPress again so i do it right next time.

  6. Hey bro,
I think knowing specifically what caused the downside will be the very first step at salvaging the situation. If it’s penguin, you’ll know where to tackle. Hummingbird for example has a different approach. The different penguin versions have different approaches too. I don’t know but can of these steps help you get rid of unnatural links?

    1. Hello Enstine,

If a site is losing its organic traffic, the main cause of the problem is de-indexing, bounce rate, wrong seo moves, slow site…

If a blog has been hammered by Google you will know. How would you know? For instant, if your blog is flagged for unnatural linking, you will receive a message in your webmaster and as well as your Gmail telling you about the action. So you can easily solve the problem through your webmaster… Those who’ve been flag for unnatural linking are those ones practicing fake seo submitting their sites to just any how directories and sites or those who paid seo companies… But hey, i am not preaching on how to solve unnatural links… That’s why i said “If you don’t know it, don’t do it”. 🙂

Your contribution is well noted and appreciated. Have a blessed day ahead buddy 🙂

    1. You probably know not only your’s many of popular sites got hit. So don’t think more increase posts, join social media, make your blog popular by commenting here and there.

    2. Hello Naveen,
I don’t think your blog has been hit by the Google update. Just try to learn how to get traffic to your blog. Read some of my traffic tips to learn how to get traffic to your blog and also you can follow what Tharoun said…
Thanks for stopping by and do have a great weekend start

    1. Hello Ambarish,

Resubmitting your sitemaps are for those that crawler have stopped visiting their blogs due to some unknown issues. If you can’t find your site on search results anymore, then resubmitting your sitemap will be your best option.

Thanks for stopping by and dropping your comment, do have a great weekend start 🙂

      1. Hey baba.

Thanks for clearing my doubt. I can see my blog in search engine and monitor the indexing of my articles in webmaster tools. I was just too curious whether I have to submit it every week. Thanks for the clearance.

        Happy blogging.

  7. Hi Baba !
This is yet another useful post from your end . I think bloggers should always check whether their latest post has been indexed by Google or not . Its probably the best method to know whether Google is visiting and indexing our blog on regular basis or not . And if the blog’s content is being indexed and stills there’s a drastic drop in traffic then the HTML improvements section in Google webmaster tools have all answers stored . ;). Thanks for sharing the info .

  8. Hi Babanature,

Thanks for these excellent tips. I have the XML sitemap plugin and it’s set to notify google and bing of updates to my blog, so I presume I don’t need to do anything manually as well?

I think the another important strategy is to make sure you’re not completely dependent on the search engines for your traffic by making an effort to generate plenty of referral traffic by engaging well with other bloggers, being active on social media and creating content people are keen to share.

    1. Hello Sue,
If your organic traffic is not dropping then, you don’t need to submit your sitemap…

That is indeed a good strategy. But know matter how we do it, we must always get traffic from search engines :). But not totally depending on them is what we should focus on.
Thanks for stopping by and dropping your lovely comment. Have a blessed weekend start…

  9. Hi Babanature,

I almost didn’t read this post because I was expecting it to be something totally different. I just read a post yesterday with this very same headline but it was about how Google is giving you more information in the search results so that you don’t actually have to click through to the site to get some of it. That’s hurting some sites of course but I guess they’re also making it easier on the people searching for specific information and saving them time.

Luckily I haven’t had this issue, knock on wood. I would hate for Google to stop sending me traffic but I can see where it can innocently happen for any of the reasons you mentioned. Of course I would never associate with any unsavory site but in the past I have had a bunch of broken links that I wasn’t aware of. I didn’t know to check that stuff back then so I can only assume there are plenty of other people in that same situation still today.

Let’s hope that’s not the case for any of your readers but if so this post will be very helpful.

Thanks for this and you enjoy what’s left of your week okay.

    1. Hello Adrienne,
Glad your blog is as neat as a crystal and you are taking care of it as well 🙂
Thanks for taking your time to comment on the post. Do have a great weekend start as well

  10. When you don’t know as you said, the best you can do is asking help in forums for suggestions. Other members with experience will inform you, no doubt on this one.

See you next time bro’. Kind regards from I. C. Daniel

PS: My designer finished my logo, she made it to fit my needs, what do you think about my logo bro’?

Remember I said no ads on header, forget about that, ads in header is a must have, many friends said so I decided is must have after all. 😀

    1. Hello Daniel,
Yeah, when you don’t know it is best to ask for directions from bloggers that are more experienced…

      It looks nice Daniel…

Thanks for the comment and do have a great weekend start…

  11. These are awesome tips. Thank you for sharing them. My blog was set up to get items from our antiques mall online. I am new to the social networking. We also use a basic website to share our items. I look forward to learning more from you and your resources. Thanks!

    1. Hello Eric,

Thanks for stopping by and do have a wonderful weekend start 🙂

  12. Hi babanature, I am following all those steps for my blog but not getting the right traffics from Google. Please have a look my Blog and tell me exact problems. I will very appreciate if you give the solution. Thanks you so much for giving this ideas.

    1. Hello Oliver,
The tips here are for those that are loosing traffic to their blogs. But if you’re not getting traffic to your blog? then you should read some of my other posts on how to drive traffic to your blog.
Thanks for the comment and do have a wonderful weekend start 🙂

  13. hi buddy,
I completely agree with your advice that if we do not know about something very specifically, we should not do it.
We should try to give more time in doing what we know rather than wasting it on doing activities which we are not sure of.

  14. I was kind of alarmed when I read the last headline (if you don’t know, don’t do it). But, I knew you would explain. You are right. We shouldn’t take unnecessary risks, instead we should educate ourselves, and then try 😀

As for Sitemaps, doesn’t Yoast have a sitemap builder? Hmm, seems like I should be adding another plugin to the list.

And, for do we need the broken link checker tool? Google already does the job for us, right?

Then again, our job is to find the errors before Google comes across it, right? 😀

Don’t engage in illegal blog activities – love that! 😀

Thanks for the tips, Babanature. Hope you have a great weekend!

    1. Hello Jeevan,
The one mistake many new bloggers make is, they carryout things they don’t have idea about and at the long run they suffer for it. Why suffering your blog when you can easily learn them online!.

If yoast has sitemap already, then there is not need to install any additional plugin for that.

The thing is, you will only see your error pages when Google have showed you through your webmaster.

Thanks for your lovely comment as always :). Have a lovely weekend…

Google shows us error pages and not external links. so if you are plugin cautious, i provide a link to a site that can check your blog for broken link…

  15. Babanature, that is some good info. I do not believe I am at that point yet, but it helps to be prepared.

My blog is so new however, I have a great topic that a lot of people can relate to. I am seeing you everywhere, that is good.

    1. Hello Micheal,
Glad you find the post interesting enough to comment… Yeah, it is good to be everywhere right?
Thanks for stopping by and dropping your comment, do have a wonderful weekend…

  16. Hey!

You nailed it my friend. I think the most important is never…ever get your hands dirty with black hat stuffs. If you do that, you are going to regret it.

Well written and thanks for sharing.

    1. Hello Reginald,
Yeah… that’s indeed the most important thing for any blogger to put at the back of their head 🙂
Thanks for stopping by and do have a wonderful weekend…

  17. Boosting your site speed and mobile responsiveness is huge Babanature. Love these tips. I re-did my theme a few weeks back and my performance difference was ridiculous. I noted more Google Traffic too.

    Thanks man,

    1. Hello Ryan,
Yeah, Google do give sites that has speed with responsive theme favors. Glad you change your theme and did see difference 🙂
Thanks for stopping by and do have a wonderful weekend…

  18. Great post bro , it is really difficult to get traffic from search engines and the steps you have explained are just the start up. Every body should be conscious about seo and backlinks as they can lead to less traffic.

    1. You are right Adeel, the main problem that kills many blogs today is the over seo practice they take on their blog.
Thanks for stopping by and dropping your comment, do have a wonderful weekend 🙂

  19. Nice post Great Tips. Thanks for sharing this post with us. Yes, these are the steps we could do for getting more traffic and the newbies like me in making common mistakes. For getting success in these, first we require a plan only then we can achieve our goal.Your article is so very helpful to me.

  20. This is a great post! Although I would stick with Yoast’s SEO plugin for the sitemap. I like it as it helped get my site listed showing the categories underneath it and it seems that I see my G+ pic next to more of the articles I find on its SERP.

I’ve had a terrible year. But its only in part to do with Penguin/Panda or whatever other animals Google is tossing at me. For me it had more to do with thin content, lack of true engagement, a poor backlink profile (not spammy just small), and a poor understanding of SEO.

So I had to audit my entire blog, restructure the site itself, tweak it so it runs fast (as I can get it on a shared host..), and started adding more ‘evergreen’ content that people want to read.

I think a lot of bloggers who just automatically assume that they were hit by Google – were just re-indexed correctly according to Google’s own rules – and not directly smacked due to anything they were or weren’t doing. They should check to see if there blog is even showing in Google by doing a site: sitenamehere in the search and see what pops up.

I’m hoping to recover from my mistakes. But it is a huge undertaking and will be a long term goal to get back to the visitor numbers I was used to. Wish me luck! And thanks again!

  21. Mobile Optimization is huge. I do a lot of reading on mobile while I’m on the go and it is pretty disappointing. So often I leave a page due to slow loading, pop ups that I can’t close etc. Not optimizing for mobile can lose a lot of potential readers now that about 1 out of 3 people are searching using their mobile device.

    Nice write up. Take care!

  22. My Blog whole traffic goes down due to Hummingbird can any one suggest me what to do ? How i can regenerate my blog traffic from Google bcoz all of my posts goes down and disappear from 1-2 page. thanks in advance

  23. Hi Babanature,

These are definitely some great tips that we should all check on a regular basis.

One thing that I did to increase my visitor traffic from Google is speed up my website. My website was loading extremely slow and after getting a CDN and removing all the unnecessary plugins, my site is loading a lot quicker.

I now need to take the time to check for broken links. Thanks for sharing these tips, hope you have a great day.

  24. I have a blog which was getting a daily pageviews around 3700-4000 and daily visitor around 2500 till 1st May. After that, suddenly it started declining and now I am getting just 1700-1900 pageviews and 1000-1200 visitors per day. It almost declined by 50-60%.

I have changed nothing including ads. I just write posts and that’s it.

Information about my webmasters tool: I have 189 URL indexed. In the sitemaps, out of 158 webpages, 156 are indexed. Pages are crawled on daily basis. Regarding posts SERP, 95% of my posts lands on first page according to GWT. Out of 5000 keywords on an average daily, 4000 results my posts to land on first page.

After writing a new post, it is indexed withing 24-48 hours by google.

Then, why my traffic is declining. If there would be a penalty, i would have lost the SERPs.
I would be glad if you can help me out there.

    Thanks 🙂
